Instincts Camp (Hockey IQ) Camp
Game Awareness
Scanning: Head Trajectory, perioral vision, shoulder to check for space and opponents before receiving the puck and when carrying the puck. Spatial Awareness
Anticipation: Recognizing where the play is going before it happens.
Decision-Making: What play am I executing? Shoot, pass, or hold the puck.
Decision Making Process
1. Perception: See/feel pressure, teammates, open ice.
2. Evaluation: Weigh options in a split second (pass, chip, carry, eat puck, regroup)
3. Execution: Apply the skill to complete chosen play
Overall Goal Is to make plays when called upon. Risk/reward management of the play choice and adaptability when the first choice is not present.
Mathew Starky
Mat grew up in East Central Alberta and played various levels from small town hockey to elite levels. Mat is an admitted lifelong student of the game approaching 17 years of involvement as a Coach, Evaluator, Club General Manager and Coach and Player Development at various Club and Private organizations.
