Checking is a critical skill in the game of Hockey. It can be the difference between a win or a loss and more importantly injuries. This is an introduction and refresher body contact clinic for any tier heading into U13/U15 and higher for both forwards and defense.
Checking- progression steps based on Hockey Canada Model
Positioning and Angling-Angling can be considered the first line of defense for a play. Body and stick positions are important in checking without making contact.
Contact Confidence and Awareness- Body contact can be very intimidating for all players. Fear in a game can cripple players skills and the enjoyment of the game. We will promote confidence in skills they have and increase on ice awareness. Instructions and drills will show players how to give and receive checks as well as avoid them, while still being highly engaged in the game.
Body Checking- Body contact is the final step in checking progression. Checking is an integral part of hockey when transitioning from defense to offense. Each player will know what a check feels like when receiving and delivering.
Small Area game play may be mixed in at the end of the practice to practice drills learned in the first hour
